BN Sports presenter: Liverpool should have sold Mohamed Salah, not Sadio Mane

Former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys and current BN Sports think Liverpool should have sold Mohamed Salah instead of Sadio Mane in the summer.

Although they only won the FA Cup and League Cup, Liverpool were a real contender to win the quartet last season. However, they had a poor start to the 2022-23 season.

The Reds are currently ranked eighth in the English Premier League table with nine points, drawn three times, won twice and lost one of their six matches so far. They also suffered an embarrassing 4-1 defeat at the hands of Napoli in the opening match of the Champions League.

Evaluating Liverpool’s start to the season, Keys admitted he was surprised by his poor performance. The critic believes Jurgen Klopp & Co are still tired after 63 games last season.

Mohamed Salah

Keys continued to express his concerns about Mohamed Salah, who has struggled to recover his form this season. He pointed out that the Merseyside-based club made a mistake by selling Mane instead of Al-Masry.

The BeIN Sports presenter wrote on his blog: “I can’t pretend to be a bit surprised by Liverpool’s faltering start. I’m sure it will come off just fine, but they look tired. Salah is still out of reach and that should be a concern for Klopp.”

He added, “I know that they had to sell either Mane or Salah because both contracts were about to expire, but at the moment it seems that they sold the wrong contract, despite the obvious difficulties that Mane faced in Munich.”

Sadio Mane

It is worth noting that Salah’s contract with Anfield was to expire in 2023, before the summer. However, he committed his future to the club and signed a new contract until 2025.

How was Salah Liverpool’s performance compared to Mane this season?

Mane has another year left on his contract with Liverpool in the summer. However, he decided to end his six-year association with the Premier League giants.

The Senegalese international joined German champions Bayern Munich. Coach Julian Nagelsmann’s side paid an initial £27.5m for the 30-year-old’s services in the summer.

Mane made a positive start to his career with the Bavarian team, scoring three goals from his first three matches in the German League. However, since then he has not known his way to the net in the German first division.

Mohamed Salah, on the other hand, has scored four goals and provided three assists from nine matches across all competitions for the Reds. He has contributed two goals more than Mane, while also playing fewer matches.
