FilGoal | News | 10 years after his departure, Lovren returns to Lyon

French club Olympique Lyonnais announced on Monday the signing of Croatian defender Diane Lovren, Zenit St. Petersburg defender.

Lovren’s contract with Zenit expires at the end of this season, but he wanted to leave this January.

Diane, 33, signed a contract that binds him to Billion until the summer of 2025.

And Lyon searched for strengthening his defense line because the team was not convinced of what Jerome Boateng had offered so far and his departure from the basic choices.

And Lovren previously played with Lyon shirts from 2010 to 2013, which means that the player returned to his former team 10 years after his departure.

Lovren said in statements published by his club’s website: “I am very happy to return to Olympique Lyonnais. It is this club that opened the doors of football outside Croatia for me. I will never forget that.”

“I have many memories here, and many connections as well, especially with Jean-Michel Aulas, the club’s president, who has always supported me,” he added.

“I left Lyon in 2013 with a lot of regret because I felt I didn’t show everything. I want to do my best.”

Lovren has played with Zenit since 2020 after his departure from Liverpool, participated in 63 matches with the team, and won the Russian League title twice and the Russian Cup 3 times.

After leaving Lyon, Lovren moved to Southampton, from there to Liverpool and then Zenit.

Lovren is one of the close friends of Mohamed Salah, the Liverpool player.

Lovren participated with Croatia in the 2022 World Cup and contributed to the team reaching the semi-finals and winning the bronze medal.
