Al-Ahly captain Mohamed El-Shennawy was surprised by the focus of some on the loss of his team to the league and cup titles last season so far, stressing that any team in the world can go through a period of decline in level.
Al-Ahly will return to face Zamalek at Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium, in the Egyptian Super Cup on Friday.
Al-Shennawy said in the pre-match press conference: “The match will be strong against our permanent competitor, Zamalek, and we hope to present a good match and to return to Egypt with the title.”
“We promise the fans to achieve this title and we look forward to doing the best and winning all the upcoming tournaments,” he added.
He stressed, “I do not know the reason for focusing on losing the league and cup title last season. I remind you that Al-Ahly is the most prominent name in the African continent, and it is the African champion twice in a row and has achieved many championships in the past few years.”
He continued, “Any team in the world can go through a relegation period, but we have prepared for the new season well, after going through the full preparation period for the first time in 3 years due to the cohesion of seasons.”
He continued, “The players of Al-Ahly and Zamalek are friends in the national team, and winning is a legitimate right for everyone. We will congratulate the winning team and wish success in the future for the losing party.”
Zamalek is playing the match after winning the league and cup double for the 2020-2021 season, while Al-Ahly ranked second in the two championships.
Zamalek began defending the league title by defeating Smouha with two goals without a response in the first round of the league, scored by Sherif Reda and Samson Akniola, and then at the expense of Ceramica Cleopatra in the second round with the same result and goals by Seif El-Din El-Jaziri and Ahmed Fattouh.
On the other hand, Al-Ahly defeated Al-Ismaili in the first round with a goal without a response, scored by Shadi Hussein, and repeated the victory with the same result in the second round at the expense of Aswan, with the goal of Ali Maaloul from a penalty kick.
