FilGoal | News | Mundo: The same trick as Griezmann… Barcelona’s plan to get rid of Pique

Barcelona has found a way to get rid of Gerard Pique for free at the end of the current season, according to the Catalan newspaper, Mundo Deportivo.

According to the newspaper, Pique will leave if he does not play 35% of the matches this season.

Pique’s contract with the Catalan club extends until the summer of 2024, but given that he is the currently highest-paid player on the list, this pushes Barcelona to get rid of his contract as soon as possible.

The 35-year-old defender has fallen a lot in the ranking of coach Xavi Hernandez’s options, after Jules Conde, Andreas Christensen, Ronald Araujo and Eric Garcia.

With the league, cup and Champions League in mind, Barcelona will play between 50 and 55 matches per season.

Therefore, if Barcelona wanted to get rid of Pique in this way, he could not play more than 19 matches.

Pique appeared in one match in the Spanish league this season, for a period of 90 minutes against Cadiz, while he played the entire second half against Victoria Plzen in the Champions League.

This is very similar to what Atletico Madrid does in his loan contract to Antoine Griezmann from Barcelona, so the Frenchman is restricted from playing after the 60th minute, in order to avoid reaching the percentage of matches needed to activate the mandatory purchase option for 40 million euros.

Also, according to Mundo Deportivo, Xavi intends to sign Athletic Bilbao defender Inigo Martinez after the departure of Pique, due to his need for a left-footed defense center, given that the quintet that he currently owns is right-footed.

It is noteworthy that Pique previously stated his desire to retire from the ranks of Barcelona, and is currently the fifth most participating player in the club’s history with 608 games.
