Rennes has announced the signing of Portuguese footballer Chica on a free transfer.

Cheka signed a two-season contract with Rennes after the end of his contract with Lille.

Cheka was present in Lille between 2017 and 2022, and his contract with him expired at the end of last season.

Rennes was forced to sign Chica after Baptiste Santamaria injured his ankle.

“He is an experienced player who has proven himself in Lille, I met him in Dijon, he is a multi-functional player,” said Olivier Kluaric, CEO of Rennes.

He added, “He also has European experience that will benefit us this season. The club needed to strengthen its ranks after Baptiste’s injury. We are happy with Cheka’s arrival.”

Florian Maurice, technical director of Rennes, said: “He is a complete midfielder who knows the French league well and has been a champion of the competition with Lille two seasons ago. We are signing an amazing player who can extract the balls and increase the attack to score goals with head and foot.”

He continued, “He is an experienced player and will add a lot to us. He played in the Champions League and the European League. He will not be able to participate in Europe with us until the end of the first round, so we hope to qualify and be able to score it in January.”

He concluded: “I like his personality very much, his enthusiasm and his winning spirit. It is important to have this type of player in your team, especially with Baptiste’s injury.”

Sheka played 144 games with Lille, during which he scored 9 goals and assisted 7.

Cheka won the French League 2021 with Lille under the leadership of Christophe Galtier, and also won the French Super Cup in the same year.

Rennes is eighth in the French Ligue 1 with 12 points from 8 matches.

Rennes is also in the second group of the European League with Fenerbahce of Turkey, AEK Larnaca of Cyprus, and Dynamo Kyiv of Ukraine.
