The Zayed Sustainability Prize announces the start of receiving applications for participation in its 2024 session

The Zayed Sustainability Prize, the leading global award launched by the UAE to honor innovative sustainability solutions, has announced the opening of applications for participation in its 2024 session.

The award receives applications for participation until May 2, 2023 through the award’s website. Applications will be open to non-profit organizations, small and medium-sized businesses, and high schools, under the five award categories of health, food, energy, water, and global high schools.

In the 2023 session, the award received a record number of applications for participation, amounting to 4,538 applications from 152 countries, an increase of 13% over the participation in the previous session.

On this occasion, Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Director General of the Zayed Sustainability Prize, said: “This year, the Zayed Sustainability Prize celebrates its 15th anniversary, in order to perpetuate the legacy of the founding father, Sheikh Zayed, may God rest his soul, and to contribute to the acceleration of sustainable development. And to promote humanitarian work and its impact around the world.In line with the directives of the leadership to support sustainability projects, the award, since its launch in 2008, has played an important role in providing sustainable solutions to societies around the world while facilitating access for millions of individuals to reliable and affordable energy sources, safe drinking water, and food And health care services. These efforts come within the framework of the UAE’s continuous efforts to stimulate international cooperation and build a sustainable and prosperous global economy.”

He added, “Young people represent an important priority for the award, as it is keen to enable them to participate in sustainable development efforts. Through the international high school category, the award provides opportunities for young people to enhance their skills in the areas of sustainability and leadership, and motivates them to contribute to an active role within their communities and support climate action.”

He continued: “The Zayed Sustainability Prize supports organizations and schools and allows them to expand the scope of their solutions and their sphere of influence, to play a greater role in achieving positive change. The award has so far contributed to making a tangible impact on the lives of more than 378 million people in various countries of the world, including Vietnam, Nepal and Sudan.” Ethiopia, Maldives and Tuvalu.

The total value of the award, amounting to 3 million dollars, is divided into five categories, where the value of the award allocated to each category is 600 thousand dollars. Start a new project or expand an existing project. The six geographic regions designated for the Global High Schools category include the Americas, sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and North Africa, Europe and Central Asia, South Asia, and East Asia and the Pacific.

The award was launched to perpetuate the legacy of the founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God rest his soul, in the field of humanitarian work and sustainable development. So far, it has honored 106 winners whose innovative solutions and distinguished projects have contributed to making a positive impact on the lives of millions of people around the world.

Despite the diversity of themes and topics included in the applications for participation, the main criterion for evaluating them is the innovative methods included in the technologies, applications and solutions provided, and the extent to which they are employed in bringing about a positive transformation in the lives of societies.

In the categories of health, food, energy and water, organizations and companies must submit projects that demonstrate the potential to contribute to improving the provision of essential products and services within communities, as well as providing a long-term vision on how to improve quality of life and working conditions. As for the international high schools category, schools must submit student projects that focus on involving students in the planning and implementation processes and following them up to reach the desired results.

The process of evaluating projects participating in the Zayed Sustainability Prize includes three stages, starting with examining applications to ensure that they meet the conditions and criteria for participation. In the second phase, the selection committee, which includes independent international experts who specialize in the fields covered by the award categories, evaluates the projects within the short list to select the final list of candidates. In the third stage, members of the jury choose the winners among the five award categories.

The winners of the 2024 Zayed Sustainability Prize cycle will be announced during the annual awards ceremony that takes place during the COP28 Climate Summit.
